Leeds were founded in 1919, after Leeds City were disbanded by the Football League. Leeds United took over Elland Road and in 1920 were elected into the Football League. In 1924 Leeds won the 2nd Division title for the 1st time, securing promotion to Division 1. Leeds secured their 1st Division 1 title in 1968/69 season and won it twice more in 1973/74 and 1991/92. Their only FA Cup win came in the 1971/72 season.

In 2001, Leeds were coming under increasing financial pressure due to loans taken out and the club not being able to repay them. This led to key players being sold and Leeds were relegated to the Championship in the 2003/04 season. In the 2006/07 season, Leeds were relegated to the 3rd tier of English Football for the 1st time in their history. Leeds wouldn’t return to the top flight until the 2020/21 season under Marcelo Bielsa.
