Founded in 1892, Newcastle United are the result of a merger from 2 football teams on either side of the City. Newcastle East who were founded in 1881 and Newcastle West who were founded in 1882, merged in 1892 when Newcastle West approached their rivals suggesting a takeover due to financial trouble. The merged club soon changed their name to Newcastle United to signify the unification between the 2 clubs.

Newcastle United joined the 2nd division at the start of the 1893/94 season, and their 1st competitive fixture was a 2-2 draw against Arsenal. Newcastle were promoted to the First Division in 1897-98 season. 

Newcastle have been Champions of England 4 times, with the last of those  victories coming in the 1926/27 season. Likewise, the last time they lifted the FA Cup was in the 1954/55 season.

Newcastle have only missed 3 seasons of Premier League football since its inception in 1992 and have never dropped below the 2nd tier of English football in its history.

Fact: Newcastle United have always played their football at St James’ Park, which was the home of Newcastle West before the clubs merged in 1892. Football in general has been played in the stadium since 1880.
