Founded in 1882 by members of the Burnley Rugby team who wanted a shift to Football Association rules like other clubs in the country. In 1883, Burnley were invited to play home games at Turf Moor bt Burnley Cricket Club. This was the 1st football ground to be visited by a Royal. In 1888 Burnley were 1of the 12 founder members of the Football League, and 1 of 6 who were from Lancashire.
Burnley have won the top tier of English Football twice in 1920/21 and 1959/60. They were also FA Cup winners back in the 1913/14 season, just before World War 1.
Burnley were initially known as the Turfites and Moorites due to their home ground being Turf Moor and also Royalties due to their connection with the Royals. In 1910, Burnley changed their home colours to those of claret and blue. This was in homage to Aston Villa who were Champions of England in 1910. From changing their home colours, Burnley have been known as The Clarets.
Fact: When Burnley won the First Division title in 1959/60, the town of Burnley became the smallest town to have the English top tier Champions.
