Founded on 10th March 1905 in the Rising Sun Pub, adjacent to the Main Entrance to Stamford Bridge, Chelsea were founded by Gus Mears, the owner of Stamford Bridge. Mears, who originally wanted Fulham to play their home games at the ground, was turned down by the London club,  and decided to found his own team and have them play at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea, who won the 2nd Division in their 2nd season, were originally a yo-yo club between the 1st and 2nd Division. A FA Cup final in 1915 and a 3rd place finish in 1920 were the best it got for the Pensioners for a number of years. Despite this, Chelsea were well known for attracting the biggest crowds in the country and held the average attendance record across 10 seasons.

The most successful spell in the clubs history, is arguably from 2003 to present when Roman Abramovic bought the club off Ken Bates. Since Roman Abramovic took over, Chelsea have been amongst the top spenders in the Premier League this has also seen them win 5 Premier League titles, 1 Champions League, 2 Europa Leagues and 5 FA Cups.

Fact: In 1982, the club was sold to Ken Bates for just £1, during a period of financial instability.
