Palace who were officially founded in 1905, claim to have links to Crystal Palace amateur club who were founded in 1861, which if true, would make them the oldest football club in the World. In 1905, Palace were founded as a professional club and then joined the Football League in 1920. In 1924 they moved to Selhurst Park, which is their home today.
Palace home colours of red and blue were worn for the 1st time in 1973, with club manager Malcolm Allison changing to colours which were inspired by Barcelona home colours. Allison also changed their nickname to The Eagles, which was inspired by Portugese giants Benfica. Before Allison joined the club, Palace were known as the Glaziers.
Despite spending the majority of their history in English Football's top 2 divisions, Palace have struggled to win trophies domestically only winning the Full Members Cup and the 2nd Tier of English football on 2 occasions.
Fact: Original Palace club colours were claret and blue, taking inspiration from fellow Premier League side Aston Villa, who helped in numerous ways which included donating their old kits to Crystal Palace. Palace also adopted a white home shirt in 1964, which was inspired by a friendly played against Real Madrid.
