Founded in 1878 as the West Bromwich Strollers by workers from George Salter’s Spring Works. They were renamed West Bromwich Albion in 1880, becoming the 1st football side in the country to have the name Albion. In 1888, West Brom were 1 of the 12 founders of the Football League. Also in 1888, the club lifted the FA Cup for the 1st time, beating Preston North End 2-1 in the Final.

West Brom won the First Division in 1919/20, and it is the only time in their history they have won the top flight. They have also won the FA Cup 5 times in 1888, 1892, 1931, 1954 and 1968. West Brom won the League Cup at the 1st attempt in 1966.

West Brom are known as The Baggies and there are a number of theories behind this nickname. One theory is it is originally a term given to them by Villa fans, as West Brom fans wore baggy trousers to protect themselves from molten iron. Another is it comes from the term bagmen, who carried turnstile takings from the turnstiles to the cash office, and would often be seen carrying them down the touchline.

Fact: There is a throstle on the club badge due to where the players used to get changed pre match. In the public house there was a pet thrush kept in a cage.
